Located at the center of the New York Harbor, Governors Island has been transformed from an abandoned military base into a model of sustainable design and a destination for recreation, culture, and innovation. Rising 70 feet above sea level, the Hills at the southern point of Governors Island offer visitors breathtaking and never-before-seen views of the Statue of Liberty, the New York Harbor, and forty acres of new rolling landscapes below. This volunteer project offers Yale Alumni the opportunity to take in the sweeping views of the New York Harbor from The Hills, as we care for our many grasses, shrubs, and trees. Volunteers will use a variety of tools to help cutback overgrown grasses and remove harmful invasive plants in order to encourage new growth of the diverse palette of plants in the Hills.
Dress for gardening. Wear sneakers or other comfortable shoes; prepare to get dirty.
