Cape Cod: Water Quality & Cultivating Quahogs in Osterville - Cancelled Due to Weather

Join Amy Croteau and Barnstable Natural Resources as we cultivate quahogs and learn about their ecological benefits to water quality.  We will learn:
 
*  What are the sources and impacts of nitrogen on water quality?
*  How do quahogs help remove nitrogen?
*  Why are they safe to eat?
*  What does “legal size” mean and how is it measured?
 
When quahogs are skittle size, they are planted very densely under protective netting. As they grow, they need more room. We will harvest, sort, and move quahogs from the depot area to North Bay, where the seed can grow to legal size and be harvested in the fall. The North Bay area has been having severe nitrogen-loading issues and the quahogs will provide a helpful eco-service.
 
Pick-up by boat will be at the Bridge Street Landing in Osterville.  We will take a short boat ride to the depot area and then continue by boat to North Bay.  We will have temporary parking passes to put on your cars.  
 
How to prepare:
*  Bring gloves!  Natural Resources (NR) uses a brand called Atlas, available at fishing supply or hardware stores. A pair of gardening gloves works just as well.
*  We will be working in knee to mid-thigh deep water.  You may want to wear a bathing suit, waders, neoprene, and/or old shoes.  NR will attempt to bring waders.  The water temperature in the Three Bays area is usually warmer than in Nantucket Sound.
*  Bring sunblock and water. Consider bringing a towel and a change of clothes.
*  No rain date.  If there are thunderstorms, downpours, or steady rain all day we will cancel.  If it’s sprinkling or there’s a possibility of a shower, we will proceed.
