2013 Yale Day of Service

  • Belmar, NJ: Post Hurricane Sandy - Belmar School District Tutoring Program. One aspect of the Yale Day of Service program in the school focused on literacy tutoring where volunteers read with students. 
  • Boise, ID: Idaho Food Bank 'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive. Seven enthusiastic alumni from the classes of 1953 to 2013 came together for the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. 
  • Chicago, IL: Greater Chicago Food Depository. A group of twenty Yale volunteers labeled and packaged 7 pallets of food, which is the equivalent of 594 cases or 14,280 cans!  
  • Evanston, IL: Y.O.U Evanston. The Yale Club Chicago with co-sponsors the Yale Black Alumni Association Chicago Chapter and the Yale Latino Alumni Association Midwest Affiliate partnered with Youth Organizations Umbrella (Y.O.U.) to revitalize their garden for low-income youth. 
  • Los Angeles, CA: Girls Empowered. Sponsored by the Yale Black Alumni Association, “Girls Empowered” was a day of empowerment and inspiration for at–risk girls, ages 12- 18. During the day, Yale alumni volunteers gave brief presentations and led small group discussions designed to inspire girls to succeed. 
  • Lynn, MA: My Brother's Table. Volunteers help unload postal trucks dropping off food and sort and package food for various free food programs in the Lynn area as well as load those items onto trucks for distribution. This is a family friendly event, and Betsy and Don Hancock ‘84, and their son, daughter and a friend take a break from the task at hand. 
  • New Haven, CT: Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop. At this great family friendly site, members of the Yale community prepare and pack project activity kits that the Museum uses for its educational programs with school children throughout the year. 
  • New York, NY: Bowery Mission. For the third year in a row, Yale alumni came together to help those in need at the Bowery Mission where they prepped and served dinner to the Mission's residents and neighborhood community members. 
  • Pittsburgh, PA: Braddock Farms Work Day. Members of the Yale Club of Pittsburgh volunteered with Grow Pittsburgh to prepare Braddock Farms for the spring/summer planting season. Here the Yale crew of hard workers is standing along one of the new fences they erected at the farm. 
  • Princeton, NJ: D&R Greenway Clean Up. Yale alumni and their families helped plant new native plants, weed beds and did general garden maintenance at the entrance garden at the Johnson Education Center. They also built Wood Duck bird houses that were installed in land trust preserves to help protect this native species. The kids loved this project! 
  • Taipei, Taiwan: Field Trip with Underprivileged Students. The Yale Club of Taipei participated in the Yale Day of Service for the first time in 2013. They had a great event with 27 Yale alumni and families and 58 students and teachers from the co-sponsoring Humanistic Education Foundation. The group took students on a cultural field trip to the ceramics town of Yingge. 
  • Martha's Vineyard: Sheriff's Meadow Sanctuary, Edgartown. Adam R. Moore '92, '95 MF, Executive Director of the Sheriff's Meadow Foundation, led a small but hearty group of Yale volunteers as they planted shrubs, pulled vines, pruned trees, raked debris, trimmed trails and cleaned rubbish. 
  • Urbana-Champaign, IL: Books2Prisoners. Sponsored by the Yale Graduate School Alumni Association, at this site volunteers read letters from prisoners, and filled the "orders" by choosing books from a collection of donated books. They also wrote letters back to the prisoners to accompany the parcel of books. The volunteers plan to return on a regular basis! 
  • Miami, FL: Vizcaya Hammock Habitat. For the third year in a row, Yalies in South Florida partnered with Urban Paradise Guild to re-create native habitats and promote sustainable models for healthy living. Stanford and Duke alumni joined the project as well. 
  • Buffalo, NY: VIVE - World Refugee Shelter and Services. Ten alumni and their family and friends helped VIVE, a refugee resettlement program. Organized by Rev. John Long, '62 MDiv, the group built raised vegetable gardens and also spent time with some of the refugee children. 
  • Summit County, UT: Marion Park Tree Planting. Kristin South ’93 and her son Sam ’16 celebrated the completion of his Freshman year at Yale by participating in Summit County's 3rd annual community tree planting as part of the Yale Day of Service. 
  • Espanola, NM: Espanola Valley Animal Shelter. Twenty alumni and friends came together to provide the Espanola Valley Animal Shelter with much needed help walking dogs, maintaining the grounds and organizing materials. Handsome Dan would be proud! 
  • Wayne, NJ: Foreign Language Study Event at William Patterson University. Co-sponsored by the Graduate School Alumni Association, this event reached over 700 high school students to emphasize the importance of language study. Alumni shared their own experiences and talked with students about the importance of language skills for career development and also judged language competitions. 
  • Hong Kong - Dodge Ball Competition with HOPE worldwide Kids. This child of an alum is serious about his preparations for a dodge ball game with children from HOPE worldwide! HOPE runs a Centre for Kids which provides academic enhancement and character education to children living in the Sham Shui Po district where many low-income families reside. 
  • Albany, NY: St. Catherine's Center for Children is a leading provider of human services in the Capital Region. Yale volunteers helped to construct a raised garden bed at the R&E May School. Some of the children served by the Center then planted and maintained the garden, and it provided vegetables for the Center’s clients this summer. 
  • London, England: IntoUniversity, North Kensington Centre. Members of the Yale Club of London shared information on their careers with disadvantaged state secondary school students. 
  • Istanbul, Turkey: AYDER (Foundation for Alternative Life) The Yale Club of Turkey partnered with the Alternative Life Association run by Yale World Fellow alumna Oya Unlu Kızıl. AYDER supports socially and physically disadvantaged people through diverse partnerships. Yale alumni helped with a mural painting project, among other activities. 
  • San Jose area, CA: Henry Coe State Park Trail Building. Yale Day of Service participants built a section of trail in Henry Coe State Park along with Volunteers for Outdoor California. Love that “Y”! 
  • New Haven: Urban Resources Initiative. Co-sponsored by the Yale Club of New Haven and the students at the Yale School of Drama, students, alumni and friends planted trees in New Haven's West River Park. 
  • Shanghai: Pudong Area Elderly Center with HandsOn Shanghai. Xiao (Albert) Huang ’12 PhD (middle holding cards) and friend Eric Wang played guessing games with Chinese characters with guests at the elderly care center along with 15 other volunteers. 
  • Taipei, Taiwan: Yale Club of Taipei member Bo Tedards ’91 and some new friends got creative at the pottery wheel when the club brought schoolchildren on a field trip to the ceramics town of Yingge. This photo won the 2013 Yale Day of Service photo contest sponsored by the Yale Alumni Magazine. 
  • Zurich, Switzerland: Zoo Excursion for Refugee Children. Yale alums chaperoned 17 children from families of "asylum seekers" on a trip to the Zürich Zoo. The day was a unique experience, as these families typically cannot afford the high cost of such expenses in Switzerland. The children come from Syria, Somalia and Iraq, as well as other countries.
