Who's coming? The DOE Fund Co-sponsored by the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York and the Yale Club of New York City Saturday, May 16, 2009 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Harlem (participants can take subway to W 145, or transportation will be provided from site on Upper East Side)
The Doe Fund is delighted to welcome the Yale Alumni Association to host our upcoming May 16th Service Day. While their bright blue uniforms make the trainees of Ready, Willing & Able easy to see as they clean 160 miles of city streets everyday, an integral yet less visible component of RWA is the career development that takes place at The Doe Fund's residential facilities after the workday is over. One of the most—if not the most—vital waypoints on our trainees’ journey to self-sufficiency is permanent, full-time employment. It is toward this end that the “men in blue” work so tirelessly with our Career Development Department. The culmination of their preparatory efforts is our Mock Interview Day, with dress rehearsal interviews conducted by staff and volunteers. This is crucial practice for our trainees, many of whom have never been on a job interview. Who We Are The Doe Fund is a non-profit organization that empowers people to break the cycles of homelessness, incarceration, and economic dependency through innovative paid work opportunities, safe and comfortable housing, comprehensive services, and social entrepreneurial business ventures. What We Do: Career Development The goals of Ready, Willing & Able are to help formerly homeless adults obtain permanent employment, secure independent housing, and maintain lasting sobriety. While trainees are working in our Community Improvement Project or other vocational training programs throughout their stay with The Doe Fund, at the half-way mark, career development preparation intensifies. Through “Job Prep,” a six-week course, trainees learn to search for full-time positions that will utilize the skills they’ve developed in RWA and that will enable them to rejoin the working world. Some of the topics covered include: • Locating suitable employment positions • Creating an effective resume and cover letter • Preparing for job interviews and dealing with difficult questions • Maintaining employment and understanding when to seek advancement • Staying motivated and keeping a positive work ethic, which includes peer cooperation and dealing with difficult situations Career Development Specialists strive to match candidates with potential employment opportunities that will not only help them continue earning the money they need to be economically self-sufficient. They also work to help RWA trainees secure positions that are fulfilling and have advancement potential. Our Graduate Services Department then monitors each graduate’s progress after they gain employment. Mock Interviews help our trainees build confidence for a major milestone—in many cases—their first permanent job. Our Mock Interview Service Days are "dress rehearsals" for the actual interviews trainees will experience as they search for full-time employment. Career Days are not only inspiring, they are fun. After conducting the mock interviews, volunteers share lunch and refreshments with our trainees, offering more informal interaction and feedback about the day. Service Day Agenda
10:00am Transportation to be provided (pickup from stop in midtown) - or a quick subway ride to W145 11:00am Yale volunteers arrive at The Doe Fund’s Harlem Center for Opportunity. 11:00am-11:30am Yale volunteers tour the facility and receive an onsite orientation to Ready, Willing & Able. 11:30am-12:30pm Mock Interview are conducted 12:30pm-1:00pm Share food and refreshments prepared by our Culinary Arts Program with the trainees. To see how we take advantage of this special asset, check out our youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/PortSideNewYork There is always maintenance work to be done on a boat -- painting and scraping, repairing portholes, cleaning the engine room and other interior areas.
