For 26 years, the Shaw Community Center has worked to enhance the lives and expand the opportunities of children, youth, and adults of the Shaw community. The organization enfranchises local families and youth through varied programs including educational programs for afterschool, college prep, and workforce preparedness. A primary focus is to develop a culture of expectations for college success.
This organization is housed in an old church that needs some love - it’s the historic town venue where Marion Anderson actually sang when denied the request to perform at Constitution Hall.
Volunteer Activities for the Yale Day of Service include:
  • Garden and Grounds work at Lincoln Temple, Shaw Program Site
  • Conducting interviews of applicants for the SCC Annual Scholarship Program
  • Painting the Heritage Performance State, Doorways, and other touch-ups
  • Connecting with and mentoring 1st Gen College prospects and exploring ongoing service
In addition, an organizational orientation will be conducted which will provide an overview of SCC and outline the ways that Yale alumni can continue to get involved.
