Volunteers learn about inner-city eco-gardening from Judith Rubleske, the founder of the Organic Gardens, before joining in with spring preparation activities including spreading mulch and planting.
Kankakee Wetlands Organic Gardens began in 2008 when a ragtag group of neighbors joined founder Judith Rubleske on a vacant city lot after securing a temporary permit to grow a neighborhood garden growing a big crop of butternut squash. The three pillars of sustainability were then (and continue to be) followed. Socially, KWOG donates a third of the harvest to the neighborhood food pantry and some charities that serve meals. Also, a third is distributed among the all volunteer membership according to their hours of service. The economic pillar is met by sales of the final third of of the harvest to local restaurants and some individuals to cover the next years’ garden expenses. We grow following “organic” methods to meet the ecological pillar.
